下以 linux 为例。

启动

nginx 有一个主进程和一些工作进程。主进程主要用于读取和执行配置文件，以及管理工作进程。
工作进程用于处理实际的请求。nginx 使用基于事件的模型和对应 OS 的机制，将请求分发给各个工作进程

首先，启动 nginx。nginx 的默认配置文件为 /etc/nginx/nginx.conf

# 启动
nginx

启动后 nginx 会在后台运行，使用 nginx -s <signal> 向 nginx 主进程发送信号
（也可以直接用 kill 命令发送 Unix 信号，此处略）

nginx -s stop   # fast shutdown
nginx -s quit   # graceful shutdown
nginx -s reopen # reloading the configuration file
nginx -s reload # reopening the log files

一旦主进程接收到重载配置文件的信号，nginx 就会检查新配置文件的语法并尝试应用之。
如果成功，主进程就生成新的工作进程，并通知旧的工作进程关闭。
否则，主进程回滚变更并继续保持旧配置。
对于被通知关闭的旧工作进程，停止处理新请求，但继续保持服务的请求直至已处理完所有请求。

配置文件

nginx 本身由模块构成，而 nginx 的配置文件由指令组成，来控制这些模块。

简单指令由名称和参数组成，以空格分隔，以分号 ; 结尾。

块指令和简单指令基本一致，但不以分号结尾，而是用花括号 {} 来包含一组其它指令。

若块指令的花括号内可以包含其它指令，则称之为上下文（context）。（上下文可以用来继承一些指令）

若指令不被其它上下文包含，则其位于 main 上下文。

注释使用 #。

nginx

events {
  worker_connections 1024;
}

http {
  server {
    listen 8080;
    location / {
      root ./data/www;
    }
    location /images/ {
      root ./data;
    }
  }
}

配置文件的 -c 选项需要使用完整路径，否则会自动添加 -p <prefix> 选项指定的前缀（默认值 /etc/nginx/）
包括在配置文件中使用的相对路径，也是并非相对于工作路径，而是自动添加前缀

下面的命令停止 nginx 进程，并设置前缀为用户主目录，配置文件位于 ~/nginx.conf

nginx -s stop
nginx -p ~/ -c nginx.conf

注意到 /etc/nginx 目录有如下结构

默认配置文件如下

    include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf;

注意 include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; 指令，
该指令读取 /etc/nginx/conf.d 目录下的所有 .conf 文件，
并用其内容填充当前 include 指令的位置，因此可以将配置文件分散到多个文件

例如 /etc/nginx/conf.d/default.conf 文件内容大致如下：

server {
    listen       80;
    server_name  localhost;

    location / {
        root   /usr/share/nginx/html;
        index  index.html index.htm;
    }
}

可以看出，nginx 是推荐使用这种方法分割多个 server 指令的。

下面给出一些简单的示例。

花括号内部的指令可以继承上下文中的指令

nginx

server {
    listen 8080;
    root /data;

    location / {
        # 此处继承： root /data;
    }
}

下面的例子使用 proxy_pass 指令

nginx

server {
    listen 8080 default_server;
    server_name _;

    location / {
        proxy_pass http://localhost:8081/;
    }

    location ~ \.(gif|jpg|png)$ {
        root /data/images;
    }
}

下面的例子启用文件列表

nginx

autoindex on;
autoindex_exact_size on;
autoindex_localtime on;

server {
    listen 8080;
    root /path/to/list;
}

下面的例子可部署 HTTPS 静态服务器

nginx

server {
    listen 443 ssl;
    server_name your_domain.com;

    ssl_certificate /path/to/ssl_certificate.crt;
    ssl_certificate_key /path/to/ssl_certificate_key.key;

    root /path/to/static/files;
    index index.html;

    location / {
        try_files $uri $uri/ =404;
    }
}
